Coal Dust Explosion Barrier
We are constantly looking at ways to improve the efficacy and efficiency of our bag barrier. Testing on the dropper at Kloppersbos was completed late last year. New products to be tested in 2023.
Would you trust another coal dust explosion barrier?
Why Choose SkillPro Barrier Bag?
SkillPro were instrumental in bringing the passive coal dust explosion barrier to the Australian Coal Mines. The SkillPro/Becker barrier bag has a long traceable history of testing by way of continuance of the full-scale testing at Tremonia Mine and the medium scale testing at Lake Lindsay Mine.
Extrapolation of data from these tests was used to confirm the Sth African Kloppersbos tunnel could be used to accurately mimic the results of the now closed test mines.
All our Coal dust explosion bag barrier parts are manufactured in Australia and tested at CSIR Kloppersbos tunnel.
Client Information
Explosion Barriers were first installed in coal mines around the world as a trough, containing either water or stone dust.
While they worked, there were two main problems with this technology. The first was that they had to be maintained and regularly refilled. More importantly, they would only work - extinguish a blast - with high pressures, 40 kPa or more.
To combat these issues, CSIR of Sth Africa developed a barrier made up of individual bags filled with stonedust, hung en masse, in a roadway.
Testing at various underground mines around the world confirmed this barrier suppressed a coal dust explosion with much lower blast wave pressures. As these various international test mines closed, the tunnel at Kloppersbos was used to assess the effectiveness of bag barriers by extrapolating the data from the full size roadways to its 2m diameter tunnel.
ACIRL (SkillPro) consultants worked with the CSIR to bring this technology to Australia. Due to their research and further testing, the bag barrier was redefined and improved. SkillPro were instrumental in developing the short bags used today and the dropper system now used for high workings.
SkillPro are still using the CSIR team in Sth Africa to develop new ways to further the effectiveness of the bag barrier system.
